IC 814: Kandahar Hijack, currently airing on Netflix, is a gripping and tightly-woven dramatization of the 1999 hijacking incident of Indian Airlines Flight IC-814. By the director’s own merit, this six-part limited series has been adapted from a book titled Flight Into Fear, written by Captain Devi Sharan, who was at the helm of that traumatic incident. It is a deep dive into the harrowing week the passengers and crew of IC-814 went through-to give viewers a tense, edge-of-the-seat experience that does justice to real life.

The series is getting great reviews for powerhouse performances, razor-sharp dialogues, and a storyline that holds one’s attention from the first to the last. Despite the dramatization of the events, the developers tried to stick to facts, therefore it wasn’t just entertaining but instructive.
Plot Overview: A Tense Journey of Survival
The series kicks off when Ram, a RAW agent stationed in Kathmandu, gets word of a possible hijack plot. Despite his best efforts to warn the Intelligence Bureau, IB, he is ignored, until finally, Flight IC-814 is hijacked en route from Kathmandu to Delhi. On board are 176 passengers and crew, besides the five armed terrorists who had taken over the plane to institute a week-long ordeal that would be a test of resolve for the Indian government, the hostages’ families, and the international community.
The plot navigates through the emotional and psychological struggle of its passengers while keenly focusing on some key characters: a distant father being forced to build up his bonding with his differently-abled son; a cabin crew member being reminded of her ailing father; and Captain Devi Sharan, played by Vijay Varma, who navigates this crisis with a gun to his head. While, back home in India, the series also forms a layer of political and bureaucratic obstacles that Home Minister Vinay, played by Manoj Pahwa, has to go through with the onus of responsibility for securing the safe release of the hostages.
Stellar Performances Elevate the Narrative
The one highlight of the film IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack is the ensemble cast that really gives depth and authenticity to the characters worked on. Vijay Varma portrays Captain Devi Sharan with much subtlety, bringing out the pressure involved in piloting an aircraft when the lives of passengers are at risk. It is in this presentation of the silent power of the captain, his breaking points, and moments of being vulnerable that makes the drama high.
Anupam Tripathi as Ram-the overshadowed RAW agent-fills his acting with such earnestness and impatience, it will echo with the audiences. Naseeruddin Shah in the role of the CMG Commander and Manoj Pahwa in the role of the Director Intelligence Bureau Mukud Mohan provide a tiresomely wise-beyond-their-years balance against all the emotional freight of the narrative with measured and practical approaches to the crisis.

Dia Mirza as Shalini, an editor who didn’t have much faith in print journalism, held high regard for journalism through TV. Patralekhaa as Chayya managed to do justice in portraying the pain of getting betrayed by her lover’s past quite sharply. Writing here supports the performance as it is very smart, not letting the series be a mere documentation but presenting all the personal and professional challenges one faced in the whole process.
Writing and Direction: A Balanced Approach to a Sensitive Topic
Director Anubhav Sinha, along with his writers Trishant Shrivastava and himself, has struck a fine balance between dramatization and facts. The series treads the sensitive issue of religious fanaticism with dignity without making the whole communities demons. This becomes evident through scenes where an ATC operator even quotes a verse from the Holy Quran to enlighten a hijacker on what it means to be a good Muslim.
The show also uses explainers between important scenes to elaborate on context, like how the Kargil War featured with respect to the decision not to land in Lahore, or nuclear sanctions imposed on India post-Pokhran influencing international responses. These moments elevate not only the narrative but also enlighten the audience about the broader geopolitical implications of the hijacking.
What Works and What Doesn’t
What Works:
Powerful Performances: The ensemble cast, with the lead role of Vijay Varma, Anupam Tripathi, and Naseeruddin Shah add to the realistic and profound impact.
Sharp Writing: The well-penned dialogues, well-crafted scenes, and the sprinkling of comic moments amidst tension make the series an engaging watch.
Balanced Direction: Anubhav Sinha has managed to balance the need for sensitive portrayal of such an issue while not losing an iota of suspense and drama as needed in such a retelling.
What Doesn’t :
Pacing Issues: While this series is interesting in general, there are some episodes that may seem a bit sluggish, more towards the middle, which could possibly try the patience of the audience looking for something more frantic in terms of a thriller. Character Development Limited: Because there is an enormity of characters and subplots involved, it seems there is always one arc that has not fully delivered; not being able to invest in some of the relationships will disturb the experience of the audience.
Verdict: A Must-Watch Series
IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack is something one should really watch if they love survival dramas or historical retellings. The series succeeds with great finesse in portraying the crisis brought about by the hijack, balancing fact and drama as it delivers an informative-entertaining serial. Of course, there are little blemishes, but they are far eclipsed by the stellar performances and the overall power of the narrative.
