Relentless rains batter southern states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, disrupting normal life in various areas. As the outcome of the depression over the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts, the unrelenting rains have caused much damage, especially in urban regions such as Hyderabad due to heavy waterlogging. The IMD has issued a red alert, and authorities are on their toes with emergency precautions for the security of the residents.
Impact on Hyderabad: Waterlogging and School Closures
Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana, was among the worst-hit places due to rain. Heavy overnight rains caused severe waterlogging at several places in the city, disrupting daily life. According to the IMD forecast, the city would experience moderate to heavy rains along with gusty winds of up to 50 kmph. As a precautionary measure, the Hyderabad District Collector has declared a holiday for all primary and secondary schools across the district on September 2, 2024. This also includes the institutions belonging to all managements like government, aided, and private schools with the sole motive of keeping the children away from inclement weather.
Red Alert Issued: Areas Under High Risk
The IMD issued a red alert for several districts in Telangana with very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall between Sunday morning and September 2. Among the districts that came under the red alert were Adilabad, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Kamareddy among others. The weather department warned that flash floods, specially in low-lying areas may take place and asked residents to be vigilant calling for required assistance.
Train Services Disrupted Across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana
While heavy rains have disrupted road transportation, rail services in both states have come to a grinding halt. The South Central Railway has cancelled over 20 trains and diverted more than 30 other trains because water logging was recorded on the tracks. Important routes between Vijayawada and Secunderabad, Visakhapatnam, and other important cities came to a close, largely inconveniencing passengers.

Consequently, Indian Railways, affected by disruptions, has arranged helpline numbers to assist the stranded passengers and provide real-time updates on services of the trains. Some of the busiest corridors are connected by these routes, and passengers are asked to check their train’s status before traveling.
Emergency Measures and Government Response
Heavy rains in both states have prompted the state governments of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to take up emergency measures in order to lessen the hardship caused by rains. According to reports, the Chief Minister of Telangana, A Revanth Reddy, called for an emergency review meeting with ministers, officials, and elected representatives, in order to gauge the situation and coordinate the relief measures. Its Andhra Pradesh counterpart, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, convened a review meeting instructing the officials to remain vigilant and extend necessary assistance to residents affected by rains.
A control room has been set up at the state secretariat in Telangana to monitor the situation and coordinate relief operations. The Chief Ministers have instructed the ministers, MPs, MLAs, and MLCs to stick to their respective places of posting and supervise local relief works.
Public Advisory and Precautions
The people of the city, particularly of the low-lying areas, will have to be alert and avoid unnecessary traveling. Flash floods and landslides in sensitive areas are likely to occur according to the forecasts issued by IMD. People have been advised to report any emergencies that arise before the authorities as soon as possible. This necessary follow-up by the government through proper scanning is executed as a measure to save the public from the excess rain and its aftereffects.

Heavy rains are lashing Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, with the situation grim in both States due to widespread disruption of normal life. The quick response of the government to the situation, coupled with IMD warnings, testifies to the gravity of the situation. People are advised to exercise caution and follow advisories issued by the authorities to help them cope with the difficult situation.
