Terror Attacks in Jammu and Kashmir: 6 Workers and Doctor Killed Amid Rising Violence

Terror attacks had brought fresh waves to Jammu and Kashmir in mid-October 2024. Within days of each other, two major incidents of such attacks took place. There were six construction workers and a local doctor who lost their lives in the Ganderbal district. Days later, two non-local laborers were shot dead by militants in Kulgam. These brutal acts of terror have devastated the region and the country, but have faced stern condemnations by all sections of political leaders to common citizens.

Attack on Ganderbal: Tunnel workers attacked

Militants targeted construction workers at a tunnel site in Gagangir area of Ganderbal along national highway Srinagar-Leh. Terror struck on a site that forms part of a big infrastructure project. Laborers working on a tunnel construction project were riddled with bullets by terrorists who opened fire haphazardly as the workers were returning to their camp. Six laborers died instantly, while a local doctor, who happened to be at the site, succumbed to injuries later, taking the death toll to seven.

The victims include locals and non-locals whose names have been identified as Dr. Shahnawaz and six workers, respectively. Five others have been injured during the attack and have been admitted to nearby hospitals for critical care. Security forces cordoned off the area immediately after the incident, and a search operation has been initiated to track down the attackers, despite no claim by any group yet.

Wave of Condemnation

There had been a flood of condemnation for the attack coming from across the political spectrum. There has been an assurance from Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha that the culprits would not go unpunished for the atrocity. Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the attack, urging authorities to carry the fight to secure the region.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari also reacted to the incident saying, “The attack on civilian workers who were employed for constructing a key infrastructure project is tragic. It is appalling that armed people do this to innocent civilian workers. I can only feel their pain.” Gadkari extended his condolences to the families of the workers.

Escalating Attacks on Non-Natives

The Ganderbal attack forms part of a disturbing trend as the attacks on non-locals in the region have increased of late. Two laborers from Uttar Pradesh were killed a few days before the Ganderbal incident in a targeted attack at Kulgam district. The incidents have been attributed to attempts by terror groups to instill fear among migrant workers and disrupt economic and infrastructural activities in the region.

The militants targeted another group of labourers who were working in a construction camp at Kulgam. Two workers were killed on the spot and several others were seriously injured. These incidents are the cause of growing fear that terror groups deliberately target non-locals working in Kashmir to spread fear and dissuade outsiders from settling or working in the region.

Increased Vigilance and Security Response

After the attacks, security forces have been increased in every region of Jammu and Kashmir. However, special focus has been given to those places that are under other infrastructure projects. Intelligence agencies have issued an alert regarding possible further escalations because militant groups seem to be targeting economic targets such as under-construction places to weaken the state’s efforts in development.

Despite these warnings, the trend has sparked debate over how watertight the current measures may be for safeguarding such vulnerable laborers. There are growing demands for the hardening of enforcement mechanisms and stronger intelligence-sharing links among security agencies to prevent another harvest of civilian lives.

Political and Humanitarian Fallout

Such incidents further brought to the surface humanitarian impacts of the continued insurgency in Kashmir. The death of migrant workers caused fear for thousands of people who throng the area in pursuit of better economic opportunities. Many are now opting against the continuance of their stay in Kashmir for the apprehension of becoming the next targets of such an attack.

The political fallout of this spate of violence is also more critical as opposition parties are retaliating against the center for its policies vis-à-vis Kashmir. Though infrastructure development is the bedrock of development in the region, some feel that safety for the workforce must always be the number one consideration.

Conclusion: The Road Ahead

As the new bouts of violence continue to plague the region, a better, coordinated security approach is emerging. Innocent lives lost in the terror attacks yet again threw the fragile peace that Jammu and Kashmir had been experiencing since decades into the winds of a prolonged conflict. How security forces would react to the new challenges remains to be seen in a government which promises stronger action against such acts.

Current hope was for the swift capture of those responsible so justice can be served and for stronger measures to be put in place to protect those who continue to work in the region under ever-present threats.
