Key Highlights:
On December 4, 2024, morning at 7:27 a.m., a 5.3 magnitude earthquake occurred in Telangana’s Mulugu district with its epicenter near Medaram. It is the second strongest earthquake that has hit the region in the last 55 years, after the 5.7 magnitude earthquake that hit Bhadrachalam in 1969.
Initial Reactions from Residents
Residents in Mulugu and Warangal districts reported unusual shaking and noises immediately after the occurrence. Many attributed these disturbances to monkey activity, a common occurrence in the area. It was only after official reports confirmed the seismic event that the true cause was understood.

Seismic Activity in Telangana
Telangana historically falls under Seismic Zone II, meaning it is a low-intensity seismic zone. The state has witnessed significant seismic activity, such as the 1969 earthquake. The tremors were reported in parts of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra, including Hyderabad and the districts surrounding it.

Scientific Analysis
The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-National Geophysical Research Institute (CSIR-NGRI) says the reason for the earthquake is the Godavari rift valley, that is a known fault zone. NGRI Director Prakash Kumar described the earthquake as of “moderate” intensity and asked for no panic. He said that aftershocks could still occur in the next few hours.
Preparations and Building Safety
Experts insist on having earthquake-resistant structures, even in low-intensity zones. D. Srinagesh, retired chief scientist of NGRI, stated that municipalities should see that new buildings are designed with respect to the seismic activities. He said that the 1993 Killari earthquake resulted in considerable casualties due to the inappropriate design of buildings. The same magnitude quake did not result in such a loss of life in places with strict building codes.
Conclusion
The December 4 earthquake reminds everyone that seismic events are not predictable. Telangana is not known for high seismic activity, but this event is a reminder of the need for preparedness and adherence to building safety standards in order to mitigate future risks.
