The much-expected action-adventure film Thangaalan, starring Chiyaan Vikram, was expected to set the box office ablaze after its release on August 15, 2024. But in reality, this movie has fallen way below expectations and stands out as one of the major disappointments in recent Tamil cinema. Despite all the hype about its release, Thangaalan failed to click with the audience, and box office numbers are really bad news about the financial prospects of the movie.
Day 24 Box Office Collections: A Grim Reality
The graph only showed numbers of underperformance as the 24th day of Thangaalan hit the screen. While the India net collection stands at ₹ 45.98 crores for the film, grossing ₹ 54.25 crores, overseas the movie has grossed ₹ 16.80 crores – making ₹ 71.05 crores worldwide.
These are far from promising figures, considering the film’s massive budget of ₹135 crores. With the movie still needing to recover almost 47% of its production cost, one thing is sure: Thangaalan has a long way to go before it breaks even-if it ever does.
The Impact of The Greatest of All Time (GOAT)
One of the main reasons behind this disappointing box office run for Thangaalan has been the release of Thalapathy Vijay’s The Greatest Of All Time, which monopolized the Tamil Nadu Box Office. GOAT became a massive hit and attracted crowds from Thangaalan, thus seriously affecting its collections. With GOAT still going strong, the chances for Thangaalan to get back on its feet seem dimmer by the day.

While Vikram’s highly acclaimed performance was in the film, Thangaalan just couldn’t impress the larger audience. Though the storyline of this film about a tribal leader fighting his way through a dangerous sorceress is perceived to be one of the most ambitious tellings, this ambitious tale hasn’t managed to materialize into commercial success.
A Star-Studded Cast Fails to Save the Film
Thangaalan is directed by Pa Ranjith, starring, along with Vikram, Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohanan, and Daniel Caltagirone in the lead roles. In this richly detailed tapestry, the plot is woven around the tribal leader’s quest to save his village from a sorceress after he helped a British general in his quest for gold. The performance of Vikram in different avatars of the protagonist-five in all-had been one of the highlights of the movie.
The music of the film, composed by GV Prakash Kumar, has also been well appreciated and only adds to the atmospheric appeal of the movie. It’s a pity that combined skills of the cast and crew have failed to bring Thangaalan up the commercial ladder.
Financial Fallout: A Massive Setback for the Producers
The lousy box office of Thangaalan has its financial implications, too. Mounted on a whopping budget of ₹135 crores, the film has grossed only ₹71.05 crores worldwide. Since the collections in India have fallen below ₹5 lakh per day, it is now expected that the film will not be able to recover its cost. This will be a major setback for the producers, who were quite confident of the success of this venture.

Day by day, the chances of the film Thangaalan’s recovery grow dimmer. The movie is on the verge of being phased out in theaters now, with little hopes to catch up on speed in the weeks ahead.
A Harsh Lesson in the Film Industry
Thangaalan’s poor box office run is a grim reminder of the cinema world’s unpredictability. Despite having a good star cast and a seasoned director, backed by a promotional blitzkrieg, the film has fallen by the wayside. Competition from other hits like GOAT has been a contributing factor, making things worse for Thangaalan and leading to its collapse at the box office.
For Chiyaan Vikram and the film’s producers, Thangaalan is bound to stand as one of those bitter lessons on timing, competition, and audience involvement. Also, the failure of this film might not dent Vikram’s reputation as one of the top stars of Tamil cinema, but the experiment indeed tells us how big the stakes are involved in such films.
