The sacred offering at the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple, the Tirupati laddus, have caught on to a controversial firestorm after lab reports confirmed the presence of beef tallow, fish oil, and lard in ghee used in its preparation. These claims by the Telugu Desam Party, made public, have certainly let loose a political firestorm in Andhra Pradesh as ruling YSR Congress Party has gone hammer and tongs with the opposition TDP over the sanctity of this prasadam.
Lab Reports: Allegations of Adulteration
When an NDDB report of the laboratory was made public by TDP spokesperson Anam Venkata Ramana Reddy on 18 September 2024, which revealed that apart from fish oil, ghee used to prepare the famous laddus contained beef tallow and lard (pig fat), devotees as well as political parties felt outraged.
Samples of the ghee were submitted for testing in July 2024, in which foreign fats were found in the ghee. The Lab report specifies that the S-value, an index for quality of fats fell out of limits as it shows adulteration.
